I met Betsy (Smid) at at the Panakin on the 101 in April. My initial first impression of her when she walked up to meet me was; She's in jeans and t shirt, and still fashionable.ˆShe won me over when she treated me to my hot tea. We sat down in a quieter section of the café and got straight to talking about our expectations of this internship. Right away I was very comfortable simply holding a conversation with her. Betsy was easy to talk to, and when I'm this excited, and this new to everything, there's a lot to talk about. She explained her current job situation to me (that I referenced in my second blog post). I told her all about High Tech and the wonderful things Hightech Highschool has to offer me. There was never an awkward phase during our meeting of her interviewing me to decide if I was worthy of partnering with. Immediately she made me feel like this internship was going to happen. We we're going to be working together. Evene though it's a small thought, it meant a lot to know she initially wanted to work with me.
Betsy invited me to out the following day at a potential client's home to shadow her in the beginning stages of designing a space with a new client. Just the fact she included me in this scouting event filled me with confidence about this new adventure.
Between our first meeting and the beginning of internship I get a lot of time to time to mentally prepare for this internship.
I'm excited about the new experiences I'll experience, driving all over from Ocean beach, to Newport beach, from Fallbrooke to La Jolla. I get to dress up like I actually know design, and present myself like I'm an adult. I can't wait to get down and dirty, sanding down wood, beautiful staining ugly fabrics, and just giving new life to the old forgotten pieces that once filled homes years and years ago.
There's a lot on the line though. I am expected to meet the requirements for my teachers, I want to experiences something worth sharing. This journey will be something I remember for the rest of my life, Internship has created so many high expectations in my head since my first introduction to Hightech Highschool, and I just hope I can match them.....I'm sure I will.
